Night at The Museum History Unit - Easter Island Head cont.

Today we moved on to step two of our Easter Island head project, and our Cinco de Mayo pinata. For the pinata, this meant adding a layer of white paper. The white paper strips go on the same way the initial layer of newspaper did, using a glue and water mixture to make them stick. I like a layer of white, because then when color is added, the newsprint doesn't show through.

As far as the Easter Island head is concerned, the second step involved adding some detail. We used rolled up, glue dipped, newspaper to form eyes, nose, and a mouth. We added a hat, by wrapping newspaper around a canning jar lid, and then gluing it on top. Finally, we made a base from a poptart box. We cut the box in half, and cut a balloon sized circle in the top, Then we set the head into the circle, and secured it on with more glue covered newspaper strips.

Now, they will have to dry overnight again.

Our Theodore Roosevelt quote for today was, "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education." With that in mind, we headed off happily to Sunday school, leaving the rest of our history lessons until tomorrow.

It's great to be a homeschooler.
